Curiosity

Curiosity cannot kill the cat if it’s the internet the cat is curious about. With practically millions of things to learn that are just a few clicks (or key strokes) away, the Internet can never be a boring place.

The best way to take a break or to use your slack time is to learn something new, something fun, something that can help your career or something that can help you to see things in a whole new way.

In this article I have scooped out 10 websites that can help you learn new things and to better understand the things that you have been doing.  Here is the list presented in no particular order.

1. How Stuff Works (link).

Founded by North Carolina State University Professor Marshall Brain in 1998, the site is now an online resource for millions of people of all ages.

2. eHow (link)

Want to learn how to fix something then eHow.com is your stop. You can learn “How to Restore Your Sleep Cycle“. If you are more ambitious then you can try “How to Make Money on the Internet“.

No matter what’s on your list, eHow can help. With more than 30 categories that cover just about everything, eHow is your one-stop online resource for life’s challenges. 3. Livemocha (link)

This is one of my favorites. This website helps you to learn new languages the social way.  The website was launched in 2007 and it has grown to over 15 million members from over 195 countries.

The mission is simple “We will create a world in which every human being is fluent in multiple languages.”  And the way they do it ensures that you are able to progress rapidly. Learn a new language today!

4. treehouse (link)

If you want to learn how to build websites, create iPhone and Android apps, code with Ruby on Rails and PHP, or start a business then Treehouse is the place to go.

The extensive Treehouse library of step-by-step video courses and training exercises will give you a wide range of competitive, in-demand technology skills that will help you land your next dream job or build your startup idea. No experience? No problem!

7. Instructables (link)

Get easy to follow instructions to do stuff. It a place that lets you explore, document, and share your creations.

The seeds of Instructables germinated at the MIT Media Lab as the future founders of Squid Labs built places to share their projects, connect with others, and make an impact on the world. One of these early places was a blog Zeroprestige, which was an open source hardware experiment for kitesurfing. Here they documented their hand-sewn kites, plywood boards, and other general mayhem that happens when PhDs and high winds collide.

8. Shvoong (link)

Looking for the short version? Shvoong is the place for you! Whether you’re just too busy, or just want to learn something new, Shvoong’s here to help you get to the bottom line.

9. Codecademy (link)

Learn how to code interactively (for free).  Here you can choose to learn or to teach. Some of the popular choices for programming languages are, Ruby, Python, JavaScript and HTML/CSS.

Codecademy is a team of hackers working hard to build a better way for anyone to teach, and learn, how to code.

10. TypeRacer (link)

Learn how to type the fun way-  by competing against some of the best in the world. At the time of writing this article I see “Charlie Lawl” with a typing speed of 166 words per minute.

The award-winning online typing competition, TypeRacer, allows people to race each-other by typing quotes from books, movies, and songs. It is the first multiplayer typing game on the web.
