We get this question all the time. This seems like the first thing you will think about before you decide that you want to have a website. Cost matters, but what also matters equally, is quality and functionality.

For me to answer this question, I will usually ask my clients what are the functional requirements of your website (usually what you are expecting your new website to do). Once we get a good understanding of your expectations we can then work out a solution for you.

We have a standard worksheet that our clients are required to fill out, but more often, we find that for simple websites, it might be easier for us to talk a little over the phone about the requirements.

In this article I will attempt to outline some of the factors that can influence the development cost of your new website.

Content

The kind of content and the quantity of it is a big factor to help us calculate a cost for development and hosting. The ‘kind’ of content refers directly to how information will be presented to the visitor. Content can be text, audio, video, images, animation, interactive content and a combination of two or more of these.

The volume of content can influence the cost (hosting fees will also be affected by this factor).

Functional Requirement

The kind of interaction you expect to have with visitors through the website, the number of forms, social media integration, etc. can add to the cost for development.

Design

The design of the website is yet another major factor that is used to calculate cost. Your design can be normal (a regular website, like ours) but some designs can be far from the ordinary like Audi’s Website or Vittel. A website for Grey Goose I found to be very cool and is worth mentioning to highlight designs that are ‘out there’.

Your update frequency

How often you will require to make changes or to add content to your website will help us to decide between a static website solution or a dynamic website solution. The dynamic websites will usually have a back-end that will allow you to login and edit or add content easily. Dynamic websites will cost a bit more than static websites.

Development time

If you are pressed for time and you must get your website ‘like yesterday’ then this can influence cost. Usually we will assess the work and let you know how long it will take for development (in days) but if you want to speed up the development process then it may increase cost.

Expected Traffic

How much visitors do you expect to visit your website? If you foresee high hits (like over 40,000 daily) then this can push hosting fees up. For regular websites (with low traffic like Ori Hotel) hosting can be about USD120 per year. If you expect to get higher traffic and you have much more content like Kaieteur News then you can expect to pay between USD200 to USD300 per month.

Conclusion

Your first option to get an idea of cost is to give us a call and let us talk a little about your requirements. We may be able to give you the cost right over the phone. The second option you have is to fill out our standard worksheet and email this to us for a quotation. For a simple website (5 to 10 pages), development cost  + hosting and domain registration for two years costs around US$495.

If you are a non-profit organization, church or similar entity, you may be able to get your new website for free from GxMedia. Let us talk.

Website Prices , web design rates and web development costs can vary tremendously and people seeking to have websites developed often do not know what to expect when they make an enquiry.
